Stabbia, Florence.
Since 2017.
Three people. All work in-house. Web design for businesses in Tuscany and across Italy.
Pelican Web Design was started in Stabbia in 2017 by Marco Rossi. The name comes from something Marco\'s grandfather said: the pelican is the only bird that spends half its life underwater and the other half in the air, and is equally good at both. The studio\'s position — between the technical side of web development and the creative side of visual design — felt like the same kind of dual life.
Before Pelican, Marco worked in digital for a Florence communications agency for five years. The experience was formative: he saw that the projects that worked were the ones where someone had spent time understanding what the client actually needed before any design began. The projects that failed — and there were several expensive ones — were the ones where everyone had rushed to design before anyone had agreed on what problem they were solving.
The studio has three people. Marco handles creative direction and project management. Laura Benedetti, who joined in 2019, leads all design work. Stefano Pellegrini, who joined in 2021, handles frontend development and all performance and technical work. The three-person size is deliberate. Pelican takes on a small number of projects at a time so each one gets proper attention.
Most clients are businesses in Tuscany and Central Italy: wine estates, professional services firms, medical practices, artisan producers, hospitality businesses. Occasionally we work with clients further afield, but Tuscany is where we work best — we understand the business context, the culture, and what a Tuscan business needs from a website versus what works in a different market.
Pelican takes on a limited number of projects at any given time. Three people, all work in-house, no outsourcing.

Three people.
Everything done in-house.

Marco has been building websites for businesses in Tuscany since 2009. He started Pelican in 2017 to focus on smaller, well-made projects rather than volume. Before Pelican, he ran digital for a Florence communications agency for five years.

Laura joined Pelican in 2019. She studied visual communication in Florence and has a particular interest in designing for small businesses in traditional sectors — artisan, agricultural, professional services — that often get generic design treatment.

Stefano handles all frontend development and performance work. He is obsessive about load speed and Lighthouse scores in a way that clients rarely care about until they see the difference it makes to enquiry rates.
